New Poem Published in EQMM No. 1,000

It’s always a thrill to hear from Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine… even the rejections, but when I received my author copies for the January/February 2025 issue, I was pretty dang pumped at what I found. But also a little bit bummed-slash-nostalgic.

My new poem, “The Lost Poem,” is featured in the issue, which happens to be the historic 1,000th issue… pumped.

Also, the issue is Legendary Janet Hutchings’ final issue as Editor-in-Chief of the magazine… bummed/nostalgic.

Order EQMM to read the poem

Ellery Queen is one of the best mystery magazines of all time… the best by some accounts. Hutchings has been the EIC of EQMM for more than 30 years. She was there as the digital age brought print media to its knees in the early 2000s, and EQMM is still standing thanks to her. What a time. Learn More about her retirement here: The Rap Sheet

Janet Hutchings published my first work of fiction in 2014, “The Hard Type” (What a mind blow, receiving your first acceptance letter.) To now be sharing ink with her in her final issue is a nice bit of symmetry for me. My byline is next to Janet Hutchings’ credit in the current issue’s masthead. This is not because I have any esteem, but more likely because my little poem jammed in nicely on the last page. Though I do think the poem is a good fit to end an EIC retirement issue. In any case, I feel honored.

Hutchings will be succeeded by long-time managing editor of EQMM, Jackie Sherbow… pumped again.
